Harrogate Railway FC
A club that's close to my heart, had two very good friends connected to the club, both of who are no longer with us. One being Mark 'wal' Watson, a regular on the Harrogate Minstermen minibus where I got to know him, someone who was a great character to know and a top city supporter, I also found out after his passing, he had had a spell as Reserve Team Manager at Railway, I think it's fair to say he is much missed amongst his City supporting friends. The other person was Dave Kirk, an ex football referee who was an excellent knowledgeable football person and person in general, volunteering at Railway, I got to know Dave through briefly working in a post room in a solicitors firm offices in Leeds and we enjoyed many a good conversation about all things football related, he used to always say he enjoyed nothing more than a pint and a Chinese at the end of the working week.
Anyway my revisit, first visit for a lot of years, vs Selby, a North Yorkshire derby, however it was anything from feisty, as Selby were blown away by Railway, losing 0-3
The ground, station view, lovely wide spaces for you to stand without feeling crowded, clean and a decent perimeter fence to lean on. Excellent clubhouse at Railway, only built probably 20 years ago, on my last visit I am sure food was purchased in here, but now there is a separate food kiosk in the opposite corner, excellent pork pies on offer, although no peas, chip buttys not bad either.
The pitch has an iconic slope from touchline to touchline, but the surface was decent considering the amount of rain, bar one corner that seemed slightly boggy. A good range of partly terrace, flat walkways and seating to pick your preferred vantage point.
Admission £6 and £4, easily accessible by public transport either the Knaresborough buses 1a 1b or 1c if arriving from Harrogate, get off at Starbeck crossing or if arriving on the train get off at Starbeck station and you have a 5 minute walk either way.
Parking available but limited.
