Atherton LR FC
A bank holiday trip to Lancashire to the town of Atherton, a town with two clubs, having already visited the higher placed club Collieries, today it was a visit to LR or to give them their proper title, Laburnum Rovers. The town itself is a typical former mining town that lacks investment, but the ground at Atherton LR is very good. A fair 10/15 minute walk from the train station, an excellent elevated stand along one side with small covered terracing along the other where we took our viewing position. We went in the bar beforehand, very reasonably priced drinks and pin badges available behind the bar. Decent little food kiosk for a couple of sausage rolls too just before kick off. Some very enthusiastic fans getting an atmosphere going too, probably only half a dozen of them but passionate for their club, fair play to them.
Atherton were playing Stockport Town, I expected a close contest but it wasn't to be, Stockport were abysmal and never got going at all, Atherton 3 to the good at half time and added another 2 in the second half, it finished 5-0 but could have been 10-0. An excellent crowd of 269, with the home team having an Atherton derby to look forward to in the FA Cup next up.
Really easy on the train, if arriving into Manchester, head to Victoria for the train to Atherton, takes about 30 minutes.
