Dinnington Town FC
A trip to South Yorkshire, pre Christmas, for one of the few non league grounds in Yorkshire I've yet to visit, Dinnington Town. The game was in the Sheffield and Hallmshire Senior Cup and the opposition were Worsbrough Bridge who are flying in the North East Counties League division one this season.
The ground is a neat and tidy 4G surface with excellent viewing areas around 3 sides, a few seats if needs be, the dugouts stationed away from fans on the far side. Highlight for me when the players came out (through the excellent tunnel) was the music, Wiz Khalifa 2011 hit Black and Yellow, an excellent nod to the colours Dinnington play in as well as being one of my favourite songs. You enter the ground through a type of community centre entrance, they had some hot food on offer, a couple of sausage rolls did the job and at £1 each were good value. Clean toilets available in here too. A side door leads along a path to the ground entrance and a booth where you pay admission. Pin badges were available at the food counter and programmes on the entrance booth as well as tickets for the newly formed 50/50 half time draw, I was 9 away from winning a pre Christmas £50. Yet to see the attendance published but it was impressive, at a guess there was over 200, with a very vocal home contingent.
Onto the game and the cracking support was to be in vain, Dinnington were blown away by Worsbrough, who were 3-0 to the good going into half time. The first goal coming from an excellent run down the wing and a free header from the centre forward, the other two, both long range punts, probably to test the reflexes of the aged and unfit Dinnington keeper, who to be fair did make some good saves but was caught out by these two. A familiar face from York City and better known for the 'Subway' incident rather than his football ability lined up at left back for Dinnington in Craig Nelthorpe, to be fair his legs might have gone but he has a hell of a left foot, put some great crosses in.
Second half and Worsbrough were just coasting, they added a fourth fairly quickly a square ball across the box and a side footed finish sealed the result and brought an end to the goals. Dinnington didn't give up and if they possessed a bit more quality could have at least got on the scoresheet. For me they also had at least a couple of good shouts for penalties, one a blatant hand ball.
Theres a good quality car park at the ground and it's only about 5 or 6 miles off the M1 for any groundhoppers that are planning a visit.
