Gomersal and Cleckheaton FC

 A rarity in the West Yorkshire League with a Wednesday Night fixture, Gomersal and Cleckheaton vs Oxenhope at the excellent East Brierley Sports Hub. A top notch facility like so many modern plastic pitches that'll be used for many years to come. Basic food and refreshments facilities, we were able to get a sausage roll, bovril and tea for a very reasonable £5.50. I attended the game with my good friend from York City, Pete.


The game started at a frantic pace but Gomersal and Cleckheaton were showing far more composure on the ball and were a bigger threat going forward, they opened the scoring with a penalty for handball, we thought it was a debatable decision but the man with the camera seemed to think it was correct. It was cooly slotted home, sending the keeper the wrong way. They were two nil up soon after before Oxenhope claimed a goal back with an outstanding finish from the number 10,arrowed into the net. This was after the home side had been reduced to 10 men for a challenge in the middle of the pitch that didn't seem too bad at first glance. 


The second half and Oxenhope were making the man advantage count they equalised and then took the lead, before a ball was looped in and evaded everyone including the keeper 3-3. Oxenhope werent to be outdone though and got back to 4-3 in front and that was how the scoring finished. I can't help but feel it would have been a different outcome had the sending off not happened but they still did the job so well done to them. Play was briefly halted in the second half as the floodlights went out to my amusement but the situation was soon rectified.


An excellent facility that is well worth a visit if you are nearby. Ample standing space along one side of the pitch for spectators.

 A midweek journey to the North East, and the secluded ground of Esh Winning FC. Entry through a front door, not a turnstile, straight into the bar, mince pie and chips, good quality pies and sausage rolls on offer, I believe they have a partnership with local butchers and bakery.  A rag tag ground that oozes character, trolley shelters for cover, fake grass along the walk ways, fences and decking that have seen better days and small covered areas at the top of a bank behind the goal. A decent little main stand and a fair pitch with a traditional grass surface.  Entry £5 and £3, easier to get to by car rather than public transport. Runcorn Linnets FC

 I arrived in Manchester early doors for this one, not entirely sure where I would be going due to games being called off for waterlogged pitched. Had an excellent bacon and egg sandwich from Manchester Arndale Market, a regular stop off of mine. My first choice game was Maine Road vs AFC Blackpool but at 1130 that fell foul of the rain, so I bought my train ticket to Runcorn East and off I went to the Apec Taxi Stadium. Runcorn always resembles a fondness in my mind, due to being the setting for hit comedy of its time Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, however upon arrival at Runcorn East, the walk to the stadium couldn't have been more bleak, I passed nothing at all along the mile long route to the ground other than a sort of private road way for buses which I've never seen before and seems a good idea. FC Isle of Man

 A lovely summers weekend awaited me, for the first home game of the season vs Litherland Remyca. By far the hardest north west counties league ground to get to and cost a small fortune but I was looking forward to this one massively. To get there we took the Isle of Man Steam Packet Ferry, from Liverpool to Douglas, booking the first class area it was very comfortable and peaceful bar a few noisy Americans and a lady opposite who thought she was something but the staff were good and the free snacks and drinks were a bonus, sadly the meal I wanted wasn't available so I had to order a meat feast pizza when I arrived from the strangest branch of pizza hut I've ever seen, it didn't even have a menu on show. We had a good look around the main area of Douglas and sat on the sea front for a good while, as well as sampling the local delicacy that is kipper and marmalade sandwich, a local fish shop sells them for a very reasonable price.
