Rothwell FC
Rothwells ground is directly next door to the West Riding County F.A. stadium on Fleet Lane in Woodlesford. It is signed as Rothwell Juniors and it seems to be funded in partnership with former football league team Harrogate Town, who also have their badges all over the walls of the club house. It's a very smart set up with plenty of smaller pitches for the younger ages and then a full size grass pitch round the back of the excellent club house which is covered in pennants from other teams and offers a range of light refreshments as well as a bar. The opponents were Beeston St Anthony who are probably the best team I've seen at West Yorkshire League level.
Rothwell started brightly and despite being relegated and next to bottom, they are miles better than bottom team Pool who were quite frankly, hopeless when I saw them. However Beeston are a class act and as good as they are going forward they are solid at the back too. Beeston opened the scoring from a corner and a unchallenged header went in off the post. The second goal came from the impressive number 16, he waited and waited and I though he had waited too long but he picked his spot to perfection, right into the top corner from 18 yards out. He also got the third goal, Rothwell defence went missing and the ball was squared to him for an easy tap in. There was just enough time for Rothwell to pull one back a thunderbolt from close range making no mistake, half time.
Beestons fourth was again another tap in as the defence went missing again, albeit from an excellent cross and the fifth was a deflected cross cum shot. The referee for this one was poor with players and managers from both sides bewildered by decisions. Rothwell didn't give up and an outstanding cross allowed the number 10 an easy goal, he was one of the refs most vocal critics, maybe if he did less of that he would bag a few more goals as he had the strength and pace to cause problems.
That was full time, however Field winning at Littletown ensured Beeston finish the season as runners up. Field meanwhile take the step into part time football next season in the north east counties division one, playing at the former home of Eccleshill United now Keighley Town.
