Redcar Town FC

 A trip to Teeside, for a game under the lights at Mo Mowlem Park, an F.A. Cup fixture vs Bridlington Town. I had visited the ground around 13 years ago, for a North Riding Senior Cup game vs York City, however that was in my pre groundhopping days whilst still supporting York every week, so my memory of the place was hazy and I went for the revisit. I was pleased to see a signed Ben Godfrey York shirt hung proudly in the clubhouse, thanking Redcar Town, as far as I know he never played for them but they've obviously helped him somewhere along his career and look where he is now. 

On first viewing they looked to have made some good improvements to the ground, added extra seating and a very hi tech lift outside the club house to hoist you up to the roof balcony, I've never seen that in a football ground anywhere before. The food was very reasonably priced and the lady was organised with everything ready early on, it was sausage roll and chips for me which were very tasty. Pin badges were on the turnstiles, in pink or blue and priced at £4.50 each. I have to admit part of me was willing for a Bridlington win this evening with their manager being York City captain and legend Scott Kerr.

The game got underway and there was another familiar face with Tom Allan lining up as Brid captain. It all started well for the away side with them flicking the ball home from a corner in the 14th minute. The rest of the half was a bit of a non event with Redcar snuffing out their higher league opponents and all was to play for in the second half.

In the 53rd minute Bridlington hit the post and the keeper saved, also a word for the Redcar coach that told the two sets of youths to stop their behaviour, well done and their should be more of that, the 8 or 10 from Bridlington had obviously been watching too much of Green Street. That was as good as it got for the away side, they had looked open at the back the whole game, with Kerr also seemingly frustrated about the work rate of some of his squad, one of his subs even telling him to F off, if only he was worthy of talking to a player of Kerrs ability like that. Just after the hour mark and a home corner was finished wonderfully with the outside of the boot for 1-1 and seven minutes later a poor back pass and the keeper in no man's land, the Redcar forward nipped in and made it 2-1.

Redcar managed to see the game out comfortably by keeping the ball and running to the corner when they could, for a giant killing win. 289 the crowd, not counting the 20 or so that jumped over the fence 10 minutes in. Redcar march on, with the income a welcome boost whilst for Kerr there is plenty to ponder.
