Gomersal and Cleckheaton FC

Image
A rarity in the West Yorkshire League with a Wednesday Night fixture, Gomersal and Cleckheaton vs Oxenhope at the excellent East Brierley Sports Hub. A top notch facility like so many modern plastic pitches that'll be used for many years to come. Basic food and refreshments facilities, we were able to get a sausage roll, bovril and tea for a very reasonable £5.50. I attended the game with my good friend from York City, Pete. The game started at a frantic pace but Gomersal and Cleckheaton were showing far more composure on the ball and were a bigger threat going forward, they opened the scoring with a penalty for handball, we thought it was a debatable decision but the man with the camera seemed to think it was correct. It was cooly slotted home, sending the keeper the wrong way. They were two nil up soon after before Oxenhope claimed a goal back with an outstanding finish from the number 10,arrowed into the net. This was after the home side had been reduced to 10 men for a challen...

Harworth Colliery FC

A midweek trip down to the South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire border was the order of the day, the fixture a local derby vs Brodsworth Main. The ground boasts an excellent car park and is only about 3 mile from the A1M. Inside, the pitch is grass and was in excellent condition, admission at £4 and £2 is as cheap as I know, food was basic but amazingly cheap, soup, a sausage roll and a hot chocolate for £3.50. The bar over the far side, as well as blaring some fantastic 90s dance music out of the giant speaker and serving a range of cans of beer, also has an excellent range of merchandise and pin badge was duly acquired for £3. The attendance was 146 which was fantastic given there was only about 40 of us in with 5 minutes to go to kick off. The game itself was a very feisty affair, Brodsworth seemed to be intent on kicking everything and everyone, I was shocked when I looked at the league table to see them in second place. It didn't take long and Harworth had a penalty in the 7th mi...

Maghull FC

It was a trip to Merseyside on the weekend of St Patrick's Day and with Mother's Day the following day I took the mother for an all expenses paid ground hop. We started the day in Liverpool and went to the excellent pound bakery cafe for a cheap and wholesome breakfast, that for the price are also surprisingly good quality. We also went next door to their shop to acquire various bakes and sandwiches for tea on the long coach ride home. We went down to the Albert dock area for a while and enjoyed the spring sunshine before going to Liverpool Central Station to catch an Ormskirk train to Maghull. Don't be tempted to stay on a stop longer to Maghull North it's a long way from the ground. Upon arrival at Maghull station there is a small station cafe where you can get an excellent coffee if you need a caffeine fix. There's ample seating and they also do very good strawberry milkshakes. The walk to the ground is a welcoming short one, taking approximately 10 minutes at a...

Kirk Deighton Rangers FC

An easy Saturday trip after work for my second visit of the season to The Ings, home of Wetherby Athletic, shared by Kirk Deighton. I was able to find out from another spectator that the reason Deighton are sharing at the Ings is because there natural home ground has been sold, to an American religious group of all things, a crying shame that a football ground is lost for this in my opinion. The chap seems to think the ground was left as a community asset for the community so who and what has authorised the sale and who or what has benefited financially from it, a scandal I think. However the Ings is a decent setup, but lets hope they find another home of their own one day though. The game was a local derby against the team from a couple of miles away, Bardsey FC. Both sides were languishing at the wrong end of the table in 10th and 12th respectively in a 13 team division. The game was very entertaining and end to end with both teams going for the win and playing the right way. Ba...
