Immingham Town FC

 A trip to North Lincolnshire on a sunny Saturday, for a ground I was intruiged to visit. The journey took me over the Humber Bridge, priced at £2 each way, a long time since I've made that journey. After reading about the club I note that they went out of business in the 90s and their current Woodlands home fell into disrepair. On their return to the semi pro game this season a lot of work had been done to get the ground back into use for ground grading for this season, however in April, armoured cabling, a lawn mower and other items were sadly and shamefully stolen. I don't know where things stand now other than cctv units are monitoring the gate, the toilets have no lighting, the food hut seems to be light refreshments only and the pitch was described by a Brigg fan as a cow field. However to me, it just great that they are in there and playing and if they can stabilise in this division they can make gradual improvements as they go.


Brigg are flying at the minute, top of the league but in the 5th minute they survived a huge scare as the defender cleared off the line from an Immingham corner. Minutes later the Immingham keeper was caught out by the new timing rules, dropping the ball and picking it up again, the referee awarding Brigg a very dangerous free kick but it came to nothing. A Brigg corner minutes before half time was well caught, but all in all the first half was a damp squib. A mention regarding food and parking, the former is extremely limited, the ground being in a tight residential street, however the Pelham pub minutes walk away offers an ample car park with no restrictions. As for food if you walk minutes down the road to the shopping complex, an excellent pink bus, the first stop cafe, offers an extensive menu at reasonable prices, my toastie came with complimentary side salad and crisps.


Immediately from the restart a poor punch from the Immingham keeper wasn't dealt with and was stroked home by Brigg, 1-0 to the league leaders and that was how it finished with their experience and know how meaning they saw the game out fairly easily. They nearly extended their lead 8 minutes from time as they hit the post from a cross that was mis hit. 210 the crowd, a season high for Immingham and a welcome boost to the coffers.

Runcorn Linnets FC

 I arrived in Manchester early doors for this one, not entirely sure where I would be going due to games being called off for waterlogged pitched. Had an excellent bacon and egg sandwich from Manchester Arndale Market, a regular stop off of mine. My first choice game was Maine Road vs AFC Blackpool but at 1130 that fell foul of the rain, so I bought my train ticket to Runcorn East and off I went to the Apec Taxi Stadium. Runcorn always resembles a fondness in my mind, due to being the setting for hit comedy of its time Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, however upon arrival at Runcorn East, the walk to the stadium couldn't have been more bleak, I passed nothing at all along the mile long route to the ground other than a sort of private road way for buses which I've never seen before and seems a good idea. Brackley Town FC

 One of only two national league clubs I've not visited, the other being Boston. A rare trip to see my team in action, York City, with us being in good form too I was buoyant pre match. I arrived in Brackley far too early, on the plus side the turnstiles open at St James Park (there 3rd one I've visited after Newcastle and Exeter) at midday, so at least I had shelter from the horrific weather conditions, swirling torrential rain and an ice cold wind. On the downside, due to the game being segregated we were not allowed the warmth of the bar, but I was under cover and soaking up all the pre match excitement. I'd not seen city play since Solihull away last season. Unfortunately for me, the club shop at Brackley is also in the home end of the ground, however very helpfully I obtained my obligatory pin badge from the ticket office portakabin in the car park, well done for some forward thinking Brackley! Esh Winning FC

 A midweek journey to the North East, and the secluded ground of Esh Winning FC. Entry through a front door, not a turnstile, straight into the bar, mince pie and chips, good quality pies and sausage rolls on offer, I believe they have a partnership with local butchers and bakery.  A rag tag ground that oozes character, trolley shelters for cover, fake grass along the walk ways, fences and decking that have seen better days and small covered areas at the top of a bank behind the goal. A decent little main stand and a fair pitch with a traditional grass surface.  Entry £5 and £3, easier to get to by car rather than public transport.
